About the Job


Serves as a sign language interpreter and transliterates for IRS employees and visitors who are deaf/​hard of hearing.​ The incumbent will be required to interpret/​transliterate in a variety of situations, including EEO complaints, grievances, one-on-one meetings, staff meetings, special agency programs, and personnel interviews, meetings with constituency groups, large conferences adn training sessions.​


Interprets in a variety of settings involving deaf/​hard of hearing employees and hearing persons who are not familiar with sign language and the interpreting process.​


Simultaneously and consecutively interprets/​transliterates, with equal facility in rendering from American Sign Language (ASL), Contact Variety Sign (CVS), and Manually Coded English (MCE) to English and from English to the aforementiond sign languages.​


Uses oral forms of communication to provide communication access for oral deaf or hard of hearing individuals and uses tactile forms of English, ASL, CVS and MCE to interpret/​transliterate for individuals who are deaf-blind as needed.​


Interprets/ ​transliterates for deaf/​hard of hearing employees and hearing persons engaged in specialized meeting, seminars or training programs that utilize technical vocabularies and terminology unique to those fields (technical tax terminology, computer technical language).​


Interprets/ ​transliterates for deaf/​hard of hearing employees and hearing persons engaged in formal and informal meetings and other discussions with supervisors and staff members.​


Performs simultaneous, uninterrupted platform interpreting for deaf/​hard of hearing employees and hearing persons at formal conferences and ceremonies.​


Conducts an on-going program on in-house sign language instruction for employees; develops curriculum and course objectives; implements the training and evaluates the program effectiveness.​ Develops courses at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.​ Teaches sign language courses and collects available study materials for use by course participants.​


Identifies barriers and assists in resolving communication problems between supervisors and deaf/​hard of hearing employees.​ Develops and conducts orientation workshop and presentations for managers about the integration of deaf, hearing and IRS cultures and sign language instruction.​


Coordinates the scheduling of in-house/​contract interpreter services.​ Makes necessary arrangements, completes purchase order requests, and tracks hours and allocated funds.​ Coordinates interpreting requests for out of town meetings and training.​
